AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

 Calligraphy by Cao Zhaoji. Master Cao was appointed as a calligrapher at the Imperial Museum and his works adorn many a palace wall. He is perhaps most wellknown for the two pieces of calligraphy flanking Chairman Mao’s portrait on Tiananmen Gate, which read “Long Live the People’ Republic of China and “Long Live the Unity of the Peoples of the World”.

The scroll on auction, mounted on silver brocade and measuring 154 cm by 66 cm, reads:
“Sages are to be found in Heaven, the worthy in the heart, the eminent in virtue, the knight in righteousness, the small man in profit. The Emperor is to be found beside a teacher, a king among his friends, a tyrant among his ministers and the conqueror among slaves.”

 “Deer Calling in the Yangtze Gorge”, a traditional ink and brush painting by renowned artist and member of the China Artists’ Association Li Xiwu. The painting measures 74.5 cm by 45 cm.

 Three fashion items by designer Lena Liao, who has previously designed for Shanghai Tang and now has her own label:
Cream raw silk evening gown with brocade trimming, together with organza wrap shawl. Burgundy raw silk cheongsam (qipao) with gold thread motifs.
Chinese-style printed cotton top.
