Fundraising Appeal to Sponsor CLC Descendants’ Visit to Europe
The Meridian Society is currently conducting a heritage project on the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) to honour the memory of almost 100,000 men who were recruited by the British army to provide logistical help in France and Belgium during the Great War. The project comprises various events and activities aimed at raising awareness among the general public of their story.
In April of this year, our Society is organising a series of events to mark the centenary of the arrival of the first batch of CLC in Europe. These will include:
April 13: Commemoration ceremony at the Chinese Cemetery, Noyelles-sur-Mer, France
April 14: Commemoration ceremony at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium
April 19: Afternoon event of talks and screening of a documentary film of oral histories by CLC descendants at SOAS, London
The above events will be free of charge and open to the general public.
A number of CLC descendants in China have expressed a desire to come over for these events, but the costs of such a trip are posing a financial challenge to them. We also wish to invite Zhang Yan, currently pursuing a PhD degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (and featured in Jordan Paterson’s film ‘Tricks on the Dead’), to be one of the speakers on 19th April.
The Meridian Society is appealing to individuals, businesses, community centres and organisations to help raise funds to sponsor their visit to Europe. This could be by way of a donation, hosting a meal, or provision of a minibus and driver during their stay in London. Our goal is to enable 15 descendants and the speaker to join us for these important events in honour of their ancestors.
